About
We asked a simple question: why are all electric guitars flat?
The design of electric guitars navigates the challenging waters of balancing time-honored traditions with groundbreaking innovation. Unfortunately, creative advancements in guitar design are not always embraced with enthusiasm by players who hold on to classic styles.
For the most part, guitar design is a 2-dimensional exercise. Tradition requires 'flattening the blank and routing the template'. Literally, any guitar you buy is based on manipulation of outline of a Telecaster or Les Paul (and a handful of others) on a flat slab of wood. One horn, two horns, a belly-carve, arch top, a tweak here, a tweak there - all on a flat slab of wood. Other than a few ergonomic purveyors , that 3rd dimension is not changed, in fact, it is rarely even considered in the design.
So, really, why are electric guitars flat? The answer is 'that's how we've always done it'.
